Chapter Sixteen

Brutus found Sarah Jennifer in the rooms leading off her office. He frowned upon seeing she had her ops bag open on the bed. “I thought we weren’t leaving for Boston yet?”

“Change of plans,” Sarah Jennifer told him around the knife hilt in her mouth. She finished digging around in the bag and pulled out her wolf harness, which Sarai had modified to remove the rein clips and replace them with expanding pockets. “Bingo.”

She slipped the blade into the sheath on her harness and turned to the dresser to grab the firelighter she’d left there. “I have to go to Chicago, but I’ll get a vehicle while I’m there. I’ll be back in ten days, two weeks tops.”

“What do you mean, ‘change of plans?’” Brutus moaned. “Again? Can’t we just make a plan and stick to it for more than five fucking minutes?”

Sarah Jennifer picked up her boots and tied one onto each side of the harness. “Quit whining. I have to go to Chicago. It’s the closest place I know where we can get access to gravitic technology without a fight. With the power packs, we have four working vehicles.”

Brutus leaned against the wall with his arms folded. “I don’t see why you have to go all that way just for a few batteries.”

“Not batteries,” Sarah Jennifer corrected. “Power packs holding Etheric energy have a longer life than any other power source on this planet, and they are reliable.” She gave him a pointed look and returned to packing her harness. “We need that technology to power our vehicles. Besides, I need to see my sister. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”

Brutus bit down on his retort and sighed. “Because I don’t like you leaving me here where I can’t watch your back. I already lost one Alpha that way. I can’t take that.”

Sarah Jennifer shook her head, feeling sorry for him in his little-boy-lost moment. “There’s no way I can take you with me,” she told him. “I need you to lead the pack and make sure preparations for the prison rescue don’t drop off in my absence. Besides, do you really want to get stuck in the middle of my and Sylvia’s argument?”

“Why are you two feuding?” Brutus asked, deciding to come at it from another angle. “Maybe it’d be easier to see her again if I was there to diffuse the tension.”

Sarah Jennifer’s face hardened. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Brutus winced and held his hands up. “Sorry I asked. Didn’t mean to poke a sore subject.”

Sarah Jennifer sighed and dropped the harness onto the bed. “No, I’m sorry. It is a sore subject, but you trusted me with your past. I won’t keep you in the dark. I was married to a human and we were going to have a baby, but it wasn’t to be. I stayed with my husband for a long time after, but it wasn’t the same, and eventually I left. Sylvia was there for me, but I needed to be on my own, so I left her, too.
